Do You Recognise Yourself?

These are the four most common expat profiles we work with. If any of these sound familiar, this workshop was built for you.

🧳
The Job Hopper

Works 2–3 years per company, moves countries often

You've built up small pension pots at multiple employers across different countries — but you've never tracked them all in one place. The picture is fragmented.

"If you move often, you must actively track your pension."
💼
The High Earner

Good salary, assumes everything is handled

You earn well and trust that it's all sorted. But you rely entirely on your employer pension — and a silent gap in Pillar 3 is building year after year.

"A high salary does not automatically mean a complete pension."
✈️
The Returning Expat

Plans to leave the Netherlands in a few years

You're not sure what happens to your Dutch pension when you leave. You worry it might disappear or become inaccessible once you move back home or on.

"Leaving the Netherlands does NOT mean losing your pension."
📄
The Payslip Confusion

Sees pension deductions every month, doesn't understand them

Your payslip shows deductions you can't fully explain — pension contributions, loonheffing, ZVW. You receive it, you file it, but you've never really read it.

"Your payslip tells your financial story — but only if you understand it."

The 3-Pillar System

The Dutch pension system is built on three layers. Understanding how they work together is the foundation of the entire workshop.

The 3-legged chair analogy: "Think of your retirement like a 3-legged chair. If one leg is weak or missing, the whole system becomes unstable — no matter how strong the other two are."
Pillar 1 — Government

AOW

Basic State Pension

Built up over the years you live and work in the Netherlands. It provides a foundation — but for most expats it will be incomplete due to gaps in residency.

"This is a foundation — not a full solution."
Pillar 2 — Employer

Werkgeverspensioen

Employer Pension

Automatic contributions from both you and your employer, invested over time. This is where most of your pension comes from — yet most expats don't fully understand it.

"This is where most of your pension comes from — but many don't understand it."
Pillar 3 — Personal

Eigen Spaargeld

Private Savings & Investments

Your personal savings, investments, and private pension arrangements. Unlike Pillars 1 and 2, this is the layer where you have full control and can fill any gaps.

"This is where you have control."

Expat Pension Clarity Program

Financial Clarity for Expats in the Netherlands: Understanding Your Pension, Payslip & Financial System.

What You'll Learn

The Expat Reality

Why expats face unique financial challenges — pension gaps, language barriers, unfamiliar systems, and the risk of "I'll deal with it later."

The 3-Pillar System

How AOW, employer pension, and personal savings work together — and what happens when one pillar is weak or missing.

Cross-Border Transfers

What happens to your pension when you move countries — bilateral agreements, portability, and why "leaving NL" does not mean losing your pension.

Understanding Your Payslip

Gross vs net salary, pension deductions, loonheffing, ZVW — decoded line by line so your payslip actually makes sense.

Common Expat Mistakes

The five patterns that silently erode retirement security — and how recognising them early makes all the difference.

Your Action Framework

A clear 3-step plan — Understand, Check, Plan — so you leave the workshop knowing exactly what to do next.

Inside the Workshop: Payslip Breakdown

One of the most powerful moments in the workshop is the live payslip walkthrough. We break down each line so participants understand exactly what they're earning, what's being deducted, and where their pension contribution actually goes.

Sample Loonstrook
Jouw Loonstrook — Uitgelegd
Bruto salaris (Gross salary) € 4,500
Loonheffing (Income tax) - € 1,120
Pensioenpremie (Pension contribution) - € 360
ZVW-bijdrage (Health insurance) - € 137
Netto salaris (Net salary) € 2,883
For illustration only — actual amounts vary by employer, sector, and personal situation.

Common Mistakes Expats Make

These are not mistakes because people are careless — they're mistakes because the system is unfamiliar.

Ignoring pension completely

Assuming "it'll sort itself out" — the most common and most costly mistake for globally mobile professionals.

Not checking employer contributions

Just assuming contributions are correct without ever verifying what's actually being invested on your behalf.

Assuming a high salary means full coverage

Employer pension (Pillar 2) only covers part of the picture. Pillar 3 is often completely neglected by high earners.

Not planning ahead when leaving the Netherlands

Many expats leave without understanding that their Dutch pension stays — and can still be accessed later from abroad.

Not understanding the payslip

Filing it without reading it means missing the connection between your monthly deductions and your long-term retirement security.

Your 3-Step Action Plan

By the end of the session, you'll leave with a clear framework — not just knowledge, but a starting point for action.

1

Understand

Know your pension structure — which pillars you're contributing to and what you actually have.

2

Check

Review your payslip and contributions — verify what's being invested on your behalf every month.

3

Plan

Think about your long-term situation — especially if you plan to move countries in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. FCE provides financial education only. We teach concepts, systems, and frameworks — we never provide personal financial advice, product recommendations, or regulated guidance. If you need personalised advice, we encourage you to consult a qualified financial advisor.

The workshop runs 60–90 minutes in total: approximately 60 minutes of core content followed by 15–30 minutes of interactive Q&A. The format can be adjusted for your organization's needs.

Your Dutch pension does not disappear when you leave. It stays in the Netherlands and can still be accessed at retirement age, regardless of where you live at that time. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the Dutch system — and something we cover in detail in the workshop.

Not automatically. A high salary improves your Pillar 2 employer pension — but it does not fill the gaps in Pillar 1 (AOW gaps for expats) or Pillar 3 (personal savings). Many high earners have a significant retirement gap they're unaware of. This is a core theme of the workshop.

Yes. We deliver workshops both in-person and virtually. Virtual sessions are fully interactive — including real-time Q&A, polls, and scenario walkthroughs — so participants get the same engagement regardless of location.

Both individuals and organizations can book. For corporate bookings, we work with HR and mobility teams to tailor the content to your workforce's specific jurisdictions and needs.

Participants receive a comprehensive workbook, key concept summaries, and a post-workshop reference guide. Corporate partners also receive a summary report with anonymised insights from the session.
